Ion implantation
Versatile surface modifying method for different materials. Herein, ions of different elements are accelerated towards a surface with an energy high enough to make them immerse in the material in a depth of up to 0.1 µm. This leads to a surface material with modified composition and structure compared to the bulk material and therefore strongly differing properties. Beside hardness, other mechanical properties like abrasion resistance and sliding can be improved as well as corrosion resistance and other chemical properties.
