Plasma nitriding
Method for the surface hardening of metals, in particular of steel. Herein, the substrate is connected with a cathodic potential and exposed to a nitrogen/hydrogen plasma at elevated temperatures. This leads first to the removal of surface oxide, then nitrogen ions are incorporated in the metal structure close to the surface, resulting in an increased surface hardness. Furthermore, sliding properties and corrosion resistance are improved in many cases. Beside steel, aluminium and titanium can also be plasma nitrided.
