 Polytetrafluourethylene (PTFE)
Thermoplastic polymer with high crystallinic portion, known e. g. under the trade name TeflonÒ. Extreme chemical stability, is only decomposed by dissolved or molten alkaline metals. Thermally stable up to at least 400°C, high sliding ability, very low surface energy (18 mN/m), therefore hydrophobic and oleophobic effect, applied as antisticking coating. Low hardness, not transparent, very low refractive index, use in optical data transfer. PTFE surfaces can be treated to become adherent by hydrogen plasma. This is accomplished by a structuring (roughening) of the surface and partial destruction (reduction) of the C-F bonds.
